Profile
Bruno Fernandes is a Portuguese midfielder who makes attacks dangerous through the speed and disguise of his passing. He can send a runner behind the defence with an early through-ball, or shape as if to play one way before releasing the ball in another direction.
Born in Maia on 8 September 1994, he played youth football at Boavista before developing his senior career in Italy. A season with Novara in Serie B in 2012/13 led to three seasons at Udinese and one at Sampdoria. He returned to Portugal to join Sporting CP in June 2017.
In 2018/19 he scored 32 goals in all competitions, including 20 in the Portuguese league. Those figures capture an important part of his game: a midfielder capable of finishing attacks as well as supplying the final pass.
He joined Manchester United in January 2020. As captain in the 2024 FA Cup final, he helped create the decisive goal in a 2–1 win over Manchester City. With defenders moving to block a possible shot, Fernandes slipped the ball to Kobbie Mainoo, who scored United’s second.
His 2025/26 Premier League campaign brought the Player of the Season and Golden Playmaker awards. He finished with 21 league assists, setting a single-season competition record. The last came from a corner headed in by Patrick Dorgu against Brighton.
With Portugal, Fernandes started the victorious Nations League finals of 2019 and 2025. The first was a 1–0 win over the Netherlands; the second ended with a penalty-shootout victory against Spain. At the 2026 World Cup, he started Portugal’s last-16 defeat by Spain, whose stoppage-time goal settled a 1–0 game.
His passing also works from deeper midfield positions. Premier League analysis of his role in 2025 highlighted how starting farther back let him influence the tempo and find forwards with passes through the opposition. Combined with his willingness to close opponents down, that gives him ways to affect a match beyond waiting near the penalty area.
Bruno Fernandes currently plays for Manchester United as an attacking midfielder. He has represented Portugal internationally.
