Profile
Sandro Tonali is an Italian midfielder whose work stretches from protecting the defence to running beyond the ball. He moves across midfield to recover possession, including near the touchlines, and combines that coverage with forward passing and well-timed bursts into attacking space.
Born in Lodi on 8 May 2000, he developed at Lombardia Uno and Piacenza before joining Brescia in 2012. He made his professional debut in Serie B in August 2017 and helped Brescia earn promotion to Serie A in 2018/19.
AC Milan signed him on loan in September 2020 and made the move permanent the following year. He became part of their 2021/22 Serie A title-winning side, then played in every match of Milan’s run to the 2022/23 Champions League semi-finals.
He joined Newcastle United in July 2023. His first season was interrupted by a ten-month ban from competitive football for breaching Italian betting rules, imposed in October 2023. He returned in August 2024 against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup.
A deeper role at Newcastle during 2024/25 allowed Bruno Guimarães to move further forward, but Tonali still attacked when a teammate could cover. Against Southampton in January 2025, he won a header to Alexander Isak, kept running as the ball went to Anthony Gordon, and received Gordon’s pass to score. It showed how winning the ball and attacking the space could be parts of the same move.
Tonali helped Newcastle win the League Cup in March 2025, their first major domestic trophy in 70 years. He completed a permanent transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in July 2026, after three years on Tyneside.
His senior Italy debut came in October 2019 against Liechtenstein. He also started the March 2026 World Cup play-off final against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but Italy’s 1-1 draw was followed by defeat on penalties. The result left them outside the World Cup finals for a third successive tournament.
Sandro Tonali currently plays for Tottenham as a central midfielder. He has represented Italy internationally.
