Profile
Cody Gakpo is a Dutch forward whose attacking game becomes easier to understand from the left wing. Receiving the ball there lets him face a defender and decide whether to move inside towards goal or continue outside to cross. Shooting and supplying a teammate are connected parts of the same threat.
Born in Eindhoven, he developed through PSV’s youth teams before progressing through Jong PSV towards the first team. His Eredivisie debut came against Feyenoord in 2018. That June, Mark van Bommel formally promoted him to the senior squad alongside Donyell Malen, following a period of training with the first team.
Gakpo’s rise produced a decisive moment in the April 2022 Dutch Cup final: he scored the winner as PSV beat Ajax 2–1. His performances across the 2021–22 Eredivisie season also earned him the Gouden Schoen, the player-of-the-year award determined by De Telegraaf’s assessors.
He joined Liverpool in January 2023 and initially played largely through the middle under Jürgen Klopp. Arne Slot returned him to a more regular left-wing role in 2024. Gakpo explained that this gave him more opportunities to confront opponents one against one, with the option of moving inside to shoot or cross, or outside to deliver a cross.
Team honours followed in England: Gakpo collected a League Cup winner’s medal in 2024 and a Premier League winner’s medal in 2025.
For the Netherlands, he scored three times at the 2022 World Cup as they reached the quarter-finals. He also finished Euro 2024 among six joint top scorers on three goals. His display against Romania illustrated his range: he drove in from the left to score, then reached the byline and supplied Malen in a 3–0 win.
The 2026 World Cup brought another knockout-stage goal, but an earlier exit. Gakpo opened the scoring against Morocco in the round of 32 before the Netherlands drew 1–1 and lost the penalty shootout.
