Profile
Alisson Becker is a Brazilian goalkeeper whose one-on-one saves often begin with patience. By staying upright and waiting for the attacker’s move, he can make the forward commit first. He adjusts his response to the situation rather than offering the same target every time.
Born on 2 October 1992, he grew up in Novo Hamburgo and followed his older brother Muriel into Internacional’s youth system. The brothers later competed for a first-team place. Alisson made his senior debut in February 2013 and became first choice during 2014, before helping Internacional reach the 2015 Copa Libertadores semi-finals.
He joined Roma in July 2016. His first season brought cup appearances while Wojciech Szczęsny held the league place; after Szczęsny left, Alisson became the regular goalkeeper. In 2017/18, he helped Roma reach the Champions League semi-finals, establishing himself on that stage before his move to England.
Liverpool signed him in July 2018. His first season ended with the Champions League trophy and the Premier League Golden Glove, earned through 21 clean sheets. He then helped Liverpool win the league in 2019/20, ending the club’s 30-year wait, and was part of another title-winning side in 2024/25.
One of his most unusual contributions came at the opposite end of the pitch. In 2021, his stoppage-time header at West Bromwich Albion won a league match during Liverpool’s push for Champions League qualification. He became the first goalkeeper to score for the club.
With Brazil, he played all six matches of the victorious 2019 Copa América campaign, keeping five clean sheets. At the 2026 World Cup, he played the full match when Norway beat Brazil 2–1 in the last 16, ending their tournament.
His passing also shapes attacks. Liverpool goalkeeping coach Jack Robinson described how Alisson looks for space beyond a high press, but can pass short when opponents retreat. Those choices connect his defensive work to the next attack: securing the ball can become the first step in moving it quickly upfield.
Alisson Becker currently plays for Liverpool as a goalkeeper. He has represented Brazil internationally.
