Profile
Dominik Szoboszlai is a Hungarian midfielder whose running connects defensive work with attacking threat. He presses soon after possession is lost, closes down opponents to restrict their passing options and moves forward to support counterattacks. Alongside that work without the ball, he offers adventurous passing and a threat from direct free-kicks.
His father, Zsolt, a former professional footballer and youth coach, trained him from early childhood, including extra sessions after team practice. Szoboszlai’s route into senior football then ran through Austria: he made his professional debut for FC Liefering in July 2017 and his first Salzburg appearance in May 2018.
At Salzburg, he helped win league-and-cup doubles in 2018/19 and 2019/20, earning the Austrian Bundesliga’s player-of-the-season award in the latter campaign. He moved to RB Leipzig in January 2021 and won the German Cup in 2022 and 2023, scoring the second goal in the 2023 final against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Liverpool signed him in July 2023, and he helped win the Premier League in 2024/25. Under Arne Slot during that title season, he took up a more advanced midfield role. Szoboszlai explained that he was reaching the penalty area more often, giving him more chances to score or supply a teammate.
His set-piece shooting was particularly productive in 2025/26, when he scored four direct free-kicks in the Premier League. Liverpool supporters voted him the club’s men’s player of the season. In August 2026, he was appointed one of three vice-captains, alongside Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez.
For Hungary, he made his senior debut against Slovakia in March 2019. His stoppage-time winner against Iceland in November 2020 completed a 2–1 comeback that secured qualification for EURO 2020. Appointed national captain in November 2022, he became the youngest captain in men’s European Championship finals history when he led Hungary against Switzerland in June 2024.
Hungary’s attempt to reach the 2026 World Cup ended in November 2025. They twice led the Republic of Ireland in their final group match but lost 3–2 to a stoppage-time winner, missing out on a qualifying play-off place.
Dominik Szoboszlai currently plays for Liverpool as a midfielder. He has represented Hungary internationally.
