Profile
Ibrahima Konaté is a French centre-back who combines force in challenges with the speed to defend large spaces. He can follow a forward into midfield to contest the ball, while his recovery pace helps a defence hold its position further up the pitch.
Born in Paris on 25 May 1999, he began at Paris FC and joined Sochaux’s academy in 2014. He had been an aspiring striker before moving into central defence. Senior football followed in 2017, when he also made the move from Sochaux to RB Leipzig.
His 2018/19 season in Germany established him as a regular in a successful defence. Leipzig finished third in the Bundesliga with the division’s best defensive record and reached the German Cup final.
He joined Liverpool in 2021 and won the League Cup and FA Cup in his first season. He started both the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea and the Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid. A Premier League title followed in 2024/25.
Konaté’s senior France debut came against Austria in June 2022. Later that year he was part of the team that reached the World Cup final. He returned for the 2026 tournament, appearing in the third-place match against England as France finished fourth.
Real Madrid announced an agreement to sign him on 18 June 2026, following his five seasons at Liverpool. His official welcome at Madrid took place in August, adding a Spanish chapter to a career developed across French, German and English football.
His passing offers another way to change a match. In its February 2024 analysis, the Premier League highlighted how Konaté could send the ball beyond a compact defence, including a pass that released Darwin Núñez against Chelsea. The value is in bypassing opponents: one accurate delivery can turn possession in the back line into an attack behind them.
Ibrahima Konaté currently plays for Real Madrid as a centre-back. He has represented France internationally.
