Profile
Hugo Ekitike is a French striker whose game combines running at defenders with joining the play further from goal. He can drop towards midfield to receive a pass or drift left and carry the ball inside, giving an attack different ways to reach the penalty area.
Born in Reims on 20 June 2002, he played for Cormontreuil before entering Stade de Reims’ academy in 2013. A loan to Vejle in Denmark during the first half of 2021 preceded his breakthrough back in France: ten Ligue 1 goals for Reims in 2021/22.
He joined Paris Saint-Germain in July 2022 and won the French league title in 2022/23, but opportunities there were limited. A move to Eintracht Frankfurt in February 2024 offered another route forward. Initially a loan, it became a permanent transfer that April.
Frankfurt brought a fuller demonstration of his attacking range. In 2024/25 he scored 22 goals across the Bundesliga, Europa League and German Cup, including 15 in the league. Frankfurt finished third and qualified for the Champions League; Ekitike moved to Liverpool in July 2025.
His senior France debut followed against Ukraine in September 2025. He scored his first international goal against the same opponents that November. On 26 March 2026, he chipped in Michael Olise’s pass in a 2–1 friendly victory over Brazil, scoring while France were down to ten players. In April 2026 he ruptured an Achilles tendon playing for Liverpool against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, an injury that ended his season and ruled him out of the 2026 World Cup with France.
His own explanation of his style emphasises quick dribbling and one-against-one situations, alongside recognising when a pass is the better option. That choice matters when he comes away from the centre-forward position: he can carry an attack forward himself or combine with a teammate. Bundesliga analysis also highlights his pressing from the front, so his contribution includes trying to disrupt opponents as they begin their attacks.
Hugo Ekitike currently plays for Liverpool as a striker. He has represented France internationally.
