Profile
Rio Ngumoha is an English winger whose game centres on confronting defenders with the ball. He can attack either side of an opponent rather than relying on one route towards goal. In July 2026, he explained that he had practised on both wings, combining those choices with a simpler instruction: take on an isolated defender, but keep possession when the opening is not there.
His football education began in east London. East Soccer Base, founded by his older brother, was especially important in his upbringing, alongside spells with other local teams. He later entered Chelsea’s academy, where he trained with Raheem Sterling and received advice from a player he had admired growing up.
Ngumoha moved from Chelsea to Liverpool’s academy in September 2024. He played across the under-18, under-19 and under-21 teams during his first season there. On 11 January 2025, he started against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup, making his senior debut and becoming the youngest player to represent Liverpool in that competition.
His Premier League introduction brought a very different kind of finish to a match. Against Newcastle United in August 2025, he scored the winner in the 100th minute of a 3–2 victory. A Champions League substitute appearance against Atlético Madrid followed the next month, adding European senior football to his development.
The opening goal against Fulham on 11 April 2026 showed what his dribbling could create. In a 2–0 league win, Ngumoha shifted the ball through changes of direction before curling his shot in. Arne Slot highlighted both the space he made for the strike and the greater power and end product emerging from his work in training.
That breakthrough received recognition in May 2026, when he shared the Premier League Home Grown Debutant of the Season award with Max Dowman. He was also one of several recipients of a Scholar of the Year award.
International progress followed his appearances in England’s youth teams. He was not selected for England’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, but he joined the senior side’s preparation camp as a training player and made his England debut as a substitute in the 1–0 friendly win over New Zealand on 6 June 2026. His competitive debut came on 29 September, when he came off the bench in the 2–0 Nations League victory over Czechia.
