Profile
Ryan Gravenberch is a Dutch midfielder who can turn receiving the ball under pressure into a way of advancing the attack. He opens his body to face forward, finds passes through crowded central areas and carries the ball beyond opponents, creating space for teammates ahead of him.
Born in Amsterdam on 16 May 2002, he came through Zeeburgia before entering Ajax’s academy in 2010. His first-team debut followed in September 2018. He won three Dutch league titles with Ajax, including league-and-cup doubles in 2019 and 2021.
He scored the opening goal in the 2021 Dutch Cup final, which Ajax won 2-1 against Vitesse. A move to Bayern Munich in June 2022 brought a Bundesliga title in 2022/23, before he joined Liverpool in September 2023.
Arne Slot used him in a deeper midfield role during Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title campaign. His interceptions helped turn opposition passes into Liverpool attacks, while his positioning gave Alexis Mac Allister more freedom to advance. Gravenberch also won the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season award.
His December 2025 performance away to Inter illustrated both sides of that role. UEFA’s technical analysis highlighted how he screened the centre-backs and intercepted passes towards Lautaro Martínez, then received on the turn and passed forward through tight spaces. Liverpool won 1-0, with Gravenberch named Player of the Match.
With the Netherlands, he started the final as they won the 2018 European Under-17 Championship. His senior international debut came in March 2021, and he represented his country at the delayed Euro 2020 tournament that summer.
His first World Cup followed in 2026. He supplied both assists in the Netherlands’ opening 2-2 draw with Japan, setting up Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville. The Dutch campaign ended in the round of 32, when Morocco won the penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.
Ryan Gravenberch currently plays for Liverpool as a defensive midfielder. He has represented the Netherlands internationally.
