Profile
Martin Ødegaard is a Norwegian attacking midfielder who creates openings by finding space between opponents and changing the angle of an attack. His combinations on the right can draw defenders towards the ball before he slips a pass into the penalty area for a teammate’s run.
Born on 17 December 1998, he broke through at Strømsgodset in 2014, making his professional debut in April. That August, he became Norway’s youngest senior international when he started a goalless friendly against the United Arab Emirates.
Real Madrid signed him in January 2015. Loans to Heerenveen, Vitesse and Real Sociedad followed, taking him through Dutch and Spanish football before his move to England. Arsenal brought him in on loan in January 2021, then completed a permanent transfer in August of that year.
Named Arsenal captain ahead of the 2022/23 season, Ødegaard went on to lead the side to the Premier League title in 2025/26. That May also brought a Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, which Arsenal lost on penalties after a 1–1 draw in Budapest.
He also captained Norway at the 2026 World Cup, the country’s first appearance at the tournament since 1998. Their run ended in the quarter-finals on 11 July, when England won 2–1 after extra time.
His creative work is not confined to the edge of the opposition box. UEFA’s analysis of Arsenal’s November 2024 win at Sporting CP followed him dropping towards his own defence to receive and pass beyond the opposition’s front line. Higher up, he could pause to draw an opponent closer before laying the ball off, then move again to offer another passing option.
That movement has a defensive counterpart. Premier League analysis describes him joining the striker to initiate Arsenal’s press, with his first pressure sometimes enabling a teammate to win the ball. UEFA also highlighted his immediate reaction after losing possession in Lisbon: he helped regain it, then attacked the space ahead.
Martin Ødegaard currently plays for Arsenal as an attacking midfielder. He has represented Norway internationally.
