Profile
Riccardo Calafiori is a left-footed defender who is willing to carry possession out of the back line and join a move in midfield. He can play at centre-back or left-back, combining a defender's presence in the air with the passing and forward movement to help an attack develop down the left.
Born in Rome, he came through Roma's academy and made his senior debut against Juventus in August 2020. His first professional goal followed in a Europa League game against Young Boys, a strike from outside the penalty area. He had started his senior career as a left-back before learning to play more centrally.
A loan at Genoa in January 2022 was followed by a permanent move to Basel that summer. In Switzerland, Calafiori gained experience as a centre-back and played in Basel's run to the 2023 Conference League semi-finals. Bologna brought him back to Serie A in August 2023.
Under Thiago Motta at Bologna, he was encouraged to move forward into midfield when his team had the ball. Calafiori could play from the left side of the defence, step in to break up an opposition move or help make a chance himself. He was part of the side that qualified for the 2024–25 Champions League.
That willingness to go forward produced one of his defining moments for Italy at Euro 2024. Against Croatia, he supplied the pass for Mattia Zaccagni's equaliser deep into added time. The 1–1 draw secured Italy's place in the last 16, only weeks after Calafiori had made his senior international debut.
Arsenal signed him from Bologna in July 2024, adding a defender with experience in both a wide role and the centre. He went on to be part of Arsenal's 2025–26 Premier League title-winning team. His development through Italy, Switzerland and England has kept that mix of defensive work and movement with the ball at the heart of his game.
