Profile
Kai Havertz is a German forward whose movement connects midfield with the penalty area. He drops towards the ball to combine with team-mates, then runs beyond defenders or arrives from deeper positions. His height also gives a team another way forward: a target for long passes when opponents press high.
He joined Bayer Leverkusen’s academy from Alemannia Aachen in 2010 and made his Bundesliga debut against Werder Bremen in October 2016. Playing behind the striker or moving into the central forward role, he scored 17 league goals in 2018/19, showing that his midfield background could coexist with substantial scoring output.
A move to Chelsea in September 2020 led to the defining goal of his early senior career. In the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City, he ran onto Mason Mount’s through pass, beat Ederson to the ball and scored the only goal of Chelsea’s victory in Porto.
Havertz joined Arsenal in June 2023, where his ability to change positions gave the attack different options. Premier League analysis of his first season highlighted how he could drop away from the front line while another attacker moved forward, then make his own run towards goal.
In 2025/26 he helped Arsenal win the Premier League. He also scored in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on 30 May 2026, but this time his goal did not bring the trophy: the match finished 1–1 after extra time and Arsenal lost the penalty shootout.
His senior Germany debut came against Peru in September 2018. At the 2026 World Cup, he headed the equaliser against Paraguay in the round of 32, but Germany went out on penalties after a 1–1 draw. He was among the players who missed in the shootout.
His influence can also lie in helping an attack continue. In Arsenal’s September 2024 win at Tottenham, he chased a clearance, secured possession and held the ball for Gabriel Martinelli’s supporting run. The move led to the corner from which Arsenal scored: a useful example of work a goals tally alone cannot show.
Kai Havertz currently plays for Arsenal as a striker. He has represented Germany internationally.
