Profile
Jordan Pickford is an English goalkeeper whose game combines quick reactions with direct distribution. His left-footed passing can move the ball from his own area towards the opposition's goal in one delivery. A Premier League analysis in April 2025 highlighted how often he sent passes long and into the final third, offering his team a route forward without a sequence of short passes.
His comfort with the ball has roots in more than goalkeeping practice. Pickford began with Washington Envelopes before entering Sunderland's academy as a child. He also played in midfield for his school, and has credited those games, street football and Sunderland's training with helping him become more comfortable in possession.
Loans took him through non-League and the Football League before his Premier League debut for Sunderland in January 2016. That gradual route preceded a major step in June 2017, when Everton signed him from Sunderland. He reached senior international football later that year.
Pickford's England debut came against Germany at Wembley in November 2017, when he kept a clean sheet in a draw. At the 2018 World Cup, he stopped Carlos Bacca's penalty as England beat Colombia in a shootout. The save helped England win a World Cup shootout for the first time.
Tournament experience then became a recurring part of his career. He played in the EURO 2020 final defeat to Italy and was ever-present at the 2022 World Cup. At EURO 2024, he played every minute of England's run to another final, which again ended with the team as runners-up.
His reaction saves have also produced defining club moments. In Everton's 3-2 win at Newcastle during 2025/26, he pushed Sandro Tonali's late volley onto the crossbar and away. That stop won the Premier League's Save of the Season award in May 2026.
At the 2026 World Cup, Pickford started England's seven games through the semi-final defeat to Argentina. During that tournament he passed Peter Shilton's England World Cup appearance record. England subsequently took third place by beating France, but Pickford was an unused substitute in that match, with Dean Henderson in goal.
