Profile
Jarrad Branthwaite is an English centre-back whose game combines strength in close contests with the mobility to follow quicker forwards. His height helps him compete for high balls, while his willingness to receive possession deep in defence gives a team another way to begin an attack.
There is a constructive side to that physical presence. Premier League analysis of his early Everton starts in September 2023 highlighted how often he directed passes forward. Under David Moyes in early 2025, he and James Tarkowski were encouraged to carry the ball upfield before releasing it, adding another route out of defence.
Branthwaite's route to that level began in Cumbria. Born in Carlisle and raised in Wigton, he played grassroots football with Abbeytown before progressing through Carlisle United's academy. He broke into Carlisle's senior side as a teenager and moved to Everton in January 2020, taking a substantial step up the English football pyramid.
The transition included loans to Blackburn Rovers in the Championship and PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Those spells put different competitions between his early lower-league football and a regular Premier League role. At PSV, his experience also included a Europa League victory over Arsenal during the 2022–23 season.
His Dutch spell brought a tangible team achievement. Branthwaite started the April 2023 Dutch Cup final against Ajax, which PSV won on penalties after extra time. Later that summer he belonged to England's European Under-21 Championship-winning squad, a youth international honour distinct from success with the senior national team.
Returning to Everton, he became a first-choice centre-back under Sean Dyche during the 2023–24 campaign. Beside Tarkowski, Branthwaite offered strength in duels and pace, while remaining willing to play forward from deep positions. It was the season in which his Premier League career took firmer shape.
He made his senior England debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2024. A further appearance came against Spain in the Nations League on 26 September 2026, when he entered as a late substitute. Those appearances mark a separate stage of his development from his earlier England youth-team honours.
Jarrad Branthwaite currently plays for Everton as a centre-back. He has represented England internationally.
