Profile
Career & playing style
Guglielmo Vicario's goalkeeping combines jobs that can pull in opposite directions. He helps start attacks with short passes, then must defend the space behind an advanced line. At Tottenham, coach Ange Postecoglou singled out his distribution and organisation, while a match against Everton showed his reflex saves when pressure reached the penalty area.
His route was gradual. After Udinese's youth setup, Vicario played for Venezia and helped the club win promotion to Serie B in 2016/17. He joined Cagliari in 2019, spent a season on loan at Perugia and made his Serie A debut for Cagliari in April 2021, then went to Empoli on a loan that became permanent in 2022.
Empoli gave him regular top-flight work, and two seasons there brought wider attention to his saves. Tottenham described him as comfortable playing out from the back when signing him in June 2023. That move asked him to combine penalty-area reactions with a larger role in possession, because the goalkeeper was involved at the start of attacks.
Vicario played every Premier League minute for Tottenham in 2023/24. The Everton win in December 2023 showed the balance: Vicario helped start moves and organise defenders, then made close-range stops as Tottenham protected a lead. His sweeper clearances offered another answer to balls sent beyond the back line.
Italy gave him a different milestone in March 2024. He started against Ecuador, made his senior international debut and kept a clean sheet. Ecuador pressed more after half-time, when he saved from Gonzalo Plata; a goalkeeper who has waited through a quiet spell must still react sharply. Italy then selected him for its EURO 2024 squad.
The clearest cup moment came in Bilbao on 21 May 2025. Vicario started Tottenham's Europa League final against Manchester United and saved late efforts from Alejandro Garnacho and Luke Shaw. Tottenham won 1–0, and those saves helped secure the club's Europa League title. UEFA's technical observers later picked him as goalkeeper in their Team of the Season.
Hernia surgery at the end of March 2026 kept him out until the middle of May. In August 2026, Tottenham and Juventus announced his loan move to Turin. It returned him to Serie A after three seasons in England, to the league where his Empoli performances had first drawn wider attention.
