Profile
Xavi Simons is a Dutch attacking midfielder who can create danger by carrying the ball as well as passing it. Close control at speed allows him to drive towards defenders, while movement infield from the left gives him opportunities to combine, shoot or run beyond the striker.
Born on 21 April 2003, Simons played youth football with Club Deportivo Thader in Spain before developing in Barcelona’s academy and then at Paris Saint-Germain. His senior debut came for PSG in February 2021, when he came off the bench against Caen in the French Cup.
PSV provided his breakthrough in 2022/23. He scored 19 league goals to share the Eredivisie’s top-scorer award with Utrecht’s Tasos Douvikas, and helped PSV win the Dutch Cup and Dutch Super Cup. The season showed that his threat extended beyond creating chances for a centre-forward.
He returned to PSG in summer 2023 and moved on loan to RB Leipzig. The German club made the transfer permanent in January 2025. Across the 2023/24 and 2024/25 Bundesliga seasons, he scored 18 goals, adding a sustained scoring contribution to his work between midfield and attack.
His Netherlands debut came during the 2022 World Cup against the United States in the round of 16. At Euro 2024, he helped the Dutch reach the semi-finals and scored their opener against England. After taking the ball from Declan Rice, he carried it forward and struck from distance, although England recovered to win 2–1.
Simons joined Tottenham from Leipzig in August 2025. A Premier League analysis of his April 2026 performance against Brighton illustrated the freedom his game can use: he defended from the left but moved infield in possession. He crossed for Pedro Porro to score and later cut inside to finish, showing two different ways to turn space into chances.
The same combination had been evident at PSV. The German federation’s coaching analysis highlighted how his quick dribbling encouraged defenders to stand off, giving him room for crosses and cutbacks. He could also exchange passes with teammates and continue his run, making him a receiver behind the defence as well as a creator in front of it.
Xavier Simons currently plays for Tottenham as an attacking midfielder. He has represented the Netherlands internationally.
