Profile
Archie Gray is an English midfielder whose early senior career also took him into defence. His game is built around giving team-mates a passing option under pressure, controlling the ball in crowded areas and moving it on. At Leeds United, those responsibilities extended across central midfield and right-back.
Born in Durham, Gray joined the Leeds academy at under-nine level. His father Andy, grandfather Frank and great-uncle Eddie had all played for the club. He made his senior debut against Cardiff City in August 2023 and won the Championship Young Player of the Season award for 2023/24.
Gray can change the direction of an attack without attempting the final pass himself. Quick footwork creates room for him to accelerate past an opponent; carrying the ball then draws another defender towards him, opening a pass to a team-mate. From right-back, he can move inside to help circulate possession. His willingness to challenge for the ball also gives that technical game a defensive edge.
He joined Tottenham Hotspur in July 2024, but his first season brought extensive work across the back line, including a sustained spell at centre-back. His first midfield start for Spurs came at Fulham in March 2025. Even that match involved another switch: he moved back into central defence during the second half.
European success followed in May 2025, when he appeared as a substitute in Tottenham’s Europa League final victory over Manchester United in Bilbao. The following month he was part of England’s European Under-21 Championship-winning squad. England beat Germany after extra time in the final, where Gray remained an unused substitute.
His development earned recognition from Tottenham supporters in May 2026. He received the club’s three fan-voted Player of the Season awards, from the Official Supporters’ Clubs, One Hotspur members and junior members.
After captaining Tottenham at Brentford in August 2026, Gray also took on leadership responsibility with England’s under-21s. On 2 October 2026, he captained the side in a goalless draw against Slovakia in Stoke that secured qualification for the 2027 European Under-21 Championship. It was a further milestone in a pathway already marked by European honours at club and youth international level.
