Profile
Mateus Fernandes looks for ways to move a game forward from midfield. He can send a long pass across the pitch, slide a ball through a gap or carry it past an opponent. He combines those options with the energy to press and win loose balls, helping his team turn regained possession into another attack.
He is comfortable receiving under pressure, with the passing range to find a teammate further upfield. His game can involve keeping the ball moving before choosing a more direct action through the opposition. That mix of patient possession and forward intent is a useful part of his work in central midfield.
Fernandes began at Olhanense before joining Sporting CP's academy in 2016. He progressed to Sporting's B team and made his first-team league debut in October 2022. Four days later, he came off the bench against Tottenham for his first Champions League appearance, an early step from the academy into senior European football.
A loan at Estoril in 2023/24 gave him a season of regular senior football and a run to a cup final. Southampton signed him from Sporting in August 2024. He became a regular in their midfield and was voted the fans' player of the year in his first season in England.
He moved to West Ham in August 2025, continuing his Premier League development through another season in which his work included winning possession and progressing the ball. Tottenham then signed him in July 2026, bringing him back to the stadium where he had made his Champions League debut with Sporting.
His international path has included both youth leadership and senior experience. Fernandes made his Portugal debut as a substitute against the United States in 2026, but was left out of Roberto Martínez's World Cup squad that May. Later that year, he captained the Under-21s to a qualifying win over Gibraltar, delivering the corner for Gonçalo Oliveira's goal as Portugal secured a place at the 2027 European finals.
