Profile
Enzo Fernández is an Argentine midfielder who can move an attack forward from several depths. He looks for passes through midfield and switches towards wide players, while his movement further up the pitch lets him receive between opponents and arrive in the penalty area.
Born on 17 January 2001 in San Martín, near Buenos Aires, he developed in River Plate’s academy. Marcelo Gallardo gave him his first-team debut in March 2020, then encouraged a loan to Defensa y Justicia to gain senior experience.
That spell brought the 2020 Copa Sudamericana and 2021 Recopa Sudamericana. Playing under Hernán Crespo, Fernández established himself in a team that pressed opponents, contributing technical ability and ball-winning work. He returned to River in July 2021 and helped win that year’s Argentine league title.
He moved to Benfica in the summer of 2022 and, later that year, became a World Cup winner with Argentina. After scoring against Mexico as a substitute, he earned a starting place and finished the tournament with FIFA’s Young Player Award. A Copa América title followed in 2024.
Chelsea signed him from Benfica in January 2023. In the 2025 Conference League final, his header from Cole Palmer’s cross began the comeback that beat Real Betis 4–1. He also helped Chelsea win the FIFA Club World Cup that year.
His second World Cup final, in July 2026, ended in a 1–0 extra-time defeat by Spain after he was sent off. Manchester City announced his signing from Chelsea in September 2026, opening another chapter in his English career.
His passing can help create the opening for the next pass. FIFA’s study of Argentina against Australia in 2022 shows him playing wide to Marcos Acuña, receiving inside again and finding Alexis Mac Allister through the stretched defensive block. Premier League analysis later highlighted a different contribution at Chelsea: receiving between Tottenham’s midfield and defence. He can help build the attack or become its next passing option.
Enzo Fernández currently plays for Manchester City as a central midfielder. He has represented Argentina internationally.
