Profile
Cole Palmer is an English attacking midfielder who can be the passer or the runner in the same attack. From central and right-sided positions, his left foot can release a team-mate behind the defence or provide the finish himself.
Born in Manchester on 6 May 2002, he joined Manchester City’s academy at under-eight level and captained their under-18s. His senior debut came against Burnley in September 2020. He was part of City’s 2022/23 treble-winning squad before joining Chelsea in 2023.
That move brought a sustained Premier League breakthrough. In 2023/24, he scored 22 league goals and supplied 11 assists. His debut Chelsea campaign also earned him the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
He won the European Under-21 Championship with England in 2023 and made his senior international debut that November. At Euro 2024, he came off the bench to equalise against Spain in the final, although England eventually lost 2-1.
In May 2025, Palmer provided two assists in Chelsea’s 4-1 win over Real Betis in the Conference League final. UEFA named him Player of the Match, recognising the passes that changed the contest.
He was decisive again in the 2025 Club World Cup final: two goals and an assist for João Pedro helped Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0. Palmer received the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
His freedom of movement helps explain that combination of scoring and creating. Premier League analysis showed him alternating between runs beyond the last defender and through-passes from deeper on the right. In the Club World Cup final, he moved into the space between midfield and defence, linking with Malo Gusto and João Pedro. Defenders had to account for both the pass and his own route to goal.
A groin problem, and later a toe he fractured in an accident at home, kept him out from September to December 2025. In May 2026 Thomas Tuchel left him out of England’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Cole Palmer currently plays for Chelsea as an attacking midfielder. He has represented England internationally.
