Profile
Jorrel Hato is a Dutch defender whose movement with the ball connects defence and midfield. A left-footer comfortable at centre-back or left-back, he can carry possession forward from a deeper position or move infield from the flank. Those inside movements give team-mates another passing option and help create extra numbers around the ball.
His first Ajax goal, against Vitesse in November 2023, captured that willingness to keep moving. Hato began the attack in his own half, exchanged passes with team-mates and continued into the penalty area to finish from close range. His defensive game also includes recovery speed and well-timed jumps to contest high balls.
Born in Rotterdam, Hato moved from Sparta Rotterdam's youth system to Ajax in the summer of 2018. After progressing through the academy, he made his first-team debut against Den Bosch in the Dutch Cup on 11 January 2023. His Eredivisie debut followed that February, against Cambuur.
Responsibility arrived quickly. Before the end of 2023, he had captained Ajax in both the Europa League and the Dutch Cup. His development later brought an individual honour: the Eredivisie's Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year award for 2024/25, decided by the league's head coaches and the Netherlands national coach.
Hato joined Chelsea from Ajax in August 2025. The 2026 FA Cup final offered a clear example of his positional range: he started in a back three and moved to left-back when Chelsea changed shape while chasing the game. Manchester City won 1–0.
His international breakthrough came in November 2023, when he made his senior Netherlands debut against Gibraltar in European Championship qualifying. He also captained the Netherlands at the 2025 Under-21 European Championship, where they reached the semi-finals before losing to England.
At the 2026 World Cup, Hato came off the bench against Morocco in the round of 32, replacing Micky van de Ven at left wing-back. The match finished 1–1 after extra time, and the Netherlands were eliminated on penalties.
Jorrel Hato currently plays for Chelsea as a left-back. He has represented the Netherlands internationally.
