Profile
Abdukodir Khusanov is comfortable making a defender's job physical. He steps towards forwards to challenge for the ball or get in front of a pass, then uses his recovery speed when an attacker breaks into space behind him. Those two actions make him valuable both in a duel and when a defensive line has ground to recover.
His time at Lens showed that his role could also be about covering teammates. Playing in the middle of a back three, he often stayed deeper than the defenders alongside him. His strength helped him contest a ball into a striker's feet, while his pace gave him a way to deal with the next run.
Khusanov began in Bunyodkor's youth setup in Tashkent before moving to Energetik-BGU in Belarus in March 2022. It was there that he started his senior career. Lens brought him to France in July 2023, making him the first Uzbekistan international to play in Ligue 1.
In January 2025 he joined Manchester City. The move followed his emergence as a regular in Lens' defence and took him into a team with very different demands in possession. His defending supplied an immediate reason for the interest: he could squeeze a forward closely and still recover when the ball went beyond him.
He became an important part of City's 2025–26 campaign, playing in the sides that won both the League Cup and FA Cup. His speed allowed City to defend further up the pitch, with the ability to chase a pass over the top providing cover behind the pressure on the ball.
For Uzbekistan, Khusanov was part of the team that won the 2023 Asian Under-20 title. His senior international debut followed that June against Oman. In 2026 he started against Colombia at the World Cup, taking a career that had begun in Uzbek youth football onto the senior tournament stage.
