Profile
Gianluigi Donnarumma is an Italian goalkeeper who combines a large frame with agility. He can get down to low shots as well as challenge for high balls, giving him ways to intervene both before and after an opponent shoots.
Born on 25 February 1999 in Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples, he played for Club Napoli Castellammare before developing in AC Milan’s academy. His competitive first-team debut came against Sassuolo on 25 October 2015. He later helped Milan finish second in Serie A in 2020/21 and return to the Champions League.
He made his senior Italy debut against France in September 2016. At EURO 2020, played in 2021, he saved two penalties in the final shootout against England as Italy won the title. UEFA’s technical observers named him Player of the Tournament, recognising his contribution across the competition.
A move to Paris Saint-Germain followed in July 2021. He won four successive French league titles during his four seasons there, culminating in 2024/25. That final campaign also brought the club’s first Champions League title, secured with a 5–0 victory over Inter in the final.
The route to that trophy showed how he could change a knockout tie. At Liverpool in March 2025, he saved from Darwin Núñez and Curtis Jones in the shootout. UEFA observer Gareth Southgate also highlighted his aggressive punching at corners: even when the contact was imperfect, he relieved pressure on defenders facing a crowded box. His contribution extended beyond the decisive penalties.
Donnarumma moved from Paris to Manchester City in September 2025. He also won the 2025 Yashin Trophy, the goalkeeper award presented at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, having previously received it in 2021.
Italy’s 2026 World Cup campaign ended at the qualification stage. Donnarumma played in the March playoff final against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but Italy lost on penalties after a 1–1 draw and missed the tournament.
Gianluigi Donnarumma currently plays for Manchester City as a goalkeeper. He has represented Italy internationally.
