Profile
Marc Guéhi is a centre-back whose defending combines tight marking with the speed to cover danger across the penalty area. At Crystal Palace, his partnership with wing-back Tyrick Mitchell restricted space on the left. Against Liverpool in 2025, he recovered from behind Mohamed Salah to intercept a pass across the box, illustrating how anticipation and acceleration work together.
His right foot gives him another way to influence games from the left side of defence. He can carry into open space before sending diagonal passes towards runners on the opposite flank. His cross for Daniel Muñoz's winner at Burnley in December 2025 showed how that position can become a route to creating chances, rather than simply recycling possession.
Born in Abidjan and raised in London after his family moved when he was one, Guéhi played youth football at Cray Wanderers before developing in Chelsea's academy. In 2017, he scored in England's 5–2 victory over Spain in the Under-17 World Cup final. His senior Chelsea debut followed against Grimsby Town in September 2019.
A loan to Swansea City in January 2020 gave him sustained senior experience under Steve Cooper, his former England youth coach. He stayed for the following season as Swansea reached the 2021 Championship play-off final. Guéhi later credited the club with giving him the time and opportunity to develop his game.
He joined Crystal Palace in July 2021 and became club captain ahead of the 2024/25 season. In May 2025, he captained Palace to their first major trophy, the FA Cup, through a 1–0 final win over Manchester City. Palace added the Community Shield that August after beating Liverpool on penalties.
Guéhi joined Manchester City in January 2026. In May 2026, he started their 1–0 FA Cup final victory over Chelsea, winning the trophy in consecutive seasons with different clubs. His passing also featured in that final: a ball behind Chelsea's defence created a first-half opportunity for Erling Haaland.
His senior England debut came in March 2022. At EURO 2024, he started six matches, including the final, missing only the quarter-final through suspension. He also started England's 6–4 victory over France in the July 2026 World Cup bronze-medal match, which secured third place.
Marc-Israel Guéhi currently plays for Manchester City as a centre-back. He has represented England internationally.
