Claudio Echeverri

Claudio Echeverri was born in Resistencia, Argentina, and developed in River Plate's youth system. As an attacking midfielder, he can receive in the space between midfield and defence. Close control lets him turn there and carry towards a defender, opening a pass or shot. Echeverri himself has described taking defenders on as a central part of his game.

That pattern was visible for Argentina at the 2023 Under-17 World Cup. In the quarter-final against Brazil, he took possession near halfway, drove at the back line and scored the first of his three goals. Another came after he evaded the goalkeeper. The win sent Argentina into the semi-finals. The goals showed how his dribbling can make a shooting chance from a crowded defence.

River gave Echeverri his senior debut in June 2023. Manchester City signed him in January 2024 and left him at River on loan, allowing him to continue playing in the Argentine first team before he moved to England in 2025.

His next international marker was the 2025 South American Under-20 Championship. Echeverri captained Argentina, scored six times and helped them finish runners-up to Brazil.

Echeverri made his Manchester City first-team debut from the bench in the 2025 FA Cup final against Crystal Palace. At the FIFA Club World Cup that summer, he scored his first City goal with a free kick against Al Ain. The set piece showed another route to goal alongside his runs with the ball.

He spent the first part of 2025/26 on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, then moved to Girona in January 2026. Girona described a player comfortable in tight spaces, able to receive between lines and choose a final pass as well as dribble. Manchester City subsequently sent him to Benfica for the 2026/27 season. Across those moves, the recurring skill is turning a small pocket of space into a direct attack.
