Profile
John McGinn makes space for others as well as for himself. In one Aston Villa move against Lille, his movement drew a midfielder wide so Ollie Watkins could receive centrally; in another, he switched play across the pitch to attack the opposite flank. Those actions explain how he can shape a game through midfield, even from more advanced roles.
His route began at St Mirren, where he made his senior debut in October 2012 and started the club's 2013 Scottish League Cup final victory over Hearts. He moved to Hibernian in 2015, joined their Scottish Cup-winning squad in 2016, and was named Scottish Championship Player of the Season as Hibs won promotion in 2017.
McGinn signed for Aston Villa in 2018. In 2019 he scored the decisive goal against Derby County in the Championship play-off final, sending Villa into the Premier League. As captain, he led a side that finished in the league's top four in 2023/24, earning a place in the Champions League.
His work off the ball has varied with Villa's plan. UEFA's analysis of their 2025 Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain described him dropping into midfield as Villa defended deep in the first leg. In the return, Villa pressed much higher. The contrast shows the distance he may need to cover between a compact defensive line and attacks built in the opposition half.
In May 2026, McGinn scored twice late in Villa's Europa League semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest, helping overturn a first-leg deficit. He then played in the final as Villa beat Freiburg 3-0, supplying the pass for Emiliano Buendía's second goal.
For Scotland, he debuted against Denmark in March 2016 and later played at EURO 2020 and EURO 2024. He played every minute of Scotland's qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup, was named in the tournament squad, and started the group opener against Haiti. His deflected first-half goal gave Scotland a 1-0 win on its return to the competition after 28 years.
John McGinn currently plays for Aston Villa as a midfielder. He has represented Scotland internationally.
