Profile
Robert Lewandowski is a Polish centre-forward who combines penalty-area finishing with the ability to bring others into the attack. He can score with either foot or his head, and can also receive with his back to goal, protecting the ball while teammates move around him.
Born in Warsaw on 21 August 1988, he climbed through Polish football with Znicz Pruszków and Lech Poznań. He finished as leading scorer in the third tier in 2006/07, the second tier in 2007/08 and the top flight in 2009/10, before joining Borussia Dortmund in June 2010.
He helped Dortmund win two Bundesliga titles under Jürgen Klopp. His most striking European breakthrough came in April 2013, when he scored all four goals in a 4–1 Champions League semi-final first-leg win over Real Madrid. Dortmund reached the final, losing to Bayern Munich.
Lewandowski joined Bayern in July 2014. In 2019/20, he scored 55 competitive goals as Bayern won the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League. The following season brought 41 Bundesliga goals, breaking Gerd Müller’s single-season record of 40 from 1971/72.
He moved to Barcelona in July 2022 and won the Spanish league’s scoring title with 23 goals in 2022/23, his first season in the competition. In June 2026, Chicago Fire announced his arrival from Barcelona, opening a new chapter in Major League Soccer.
For Poland, he scored on his senior debut in September 2008 and contributed 13 goals in qualifying for EURO 2016. The attempt to reach the 2026 World Cup ended in March of that year, when Poland lost the playoff final 3–2 to Sweden.
His movement helps explain the goals. Bundesliga analysis highlights his awareness of the offside line, where a small difference in timing determines whether he can receive behind the defence. He also drops towards midfield to combine, leaving space for teammates to run beyond him. That gives an attack a choice: find the striker near goal, or use the space his movement opens.
Robert Lewandowski currently plays for Chicago Fire as a striker. He has represented Poland internationally.
