Profile
Frenkie de Jong is a Dutch midfielder who uses the ball to draw opponents out of position. He looks around before receiving, turns away from pressure and carries possession forward, giving his team another way to move from defence into attack.
Born on 12 May 1997, he made his senior debut for Willem II in May 2015. Ajax signed him later that year, initially loaning him back to Willem II. He made his Ajax first-team debut in September 2016, in a cup match against the club where he had started.
His breakthrough on the European stage came in 2018/19. Ajax won the Dutch league and cup and reached the Champions League semi-finals, where Tottenham eliminated them. UEFA named him Champions League Midfielder of the Season for that campaign.
He arrived in Barcelona in the summer of 2019. His first LaLiga title followed in 2022/23, with further championships in 2024/25 and 2025/26. He also won the Copa del Rey in 2021 and 2025, building a collection of domestic honours after the success of his final Ajax season.
In April 2026, his appearance against Celta Vigo took him past Phillip Cocu’s club record for a Dutch player. It was De Jong’s 293rd official Barcelona match, a milestone in a club history that also includes Johan Cruyff, Ronald Koeman and Patrick Kluivert.
He made his Netherlands debut in September 2018. The following year, he helped the Dutch reach the Nations League final and won the tournament’s young-player award. He later played in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals; the Netherlands’ 2026 campaign ended earlier, with a shootout loss to Morocco in the round of 32.
A German FA tactical study of his Ajax play explains what makes his dribbling useful. He can carry towards an opponent until that player leaves a teammate free, then release the pass. When pressed from behind, body feints and a change of direction help him escape before accelerating. The point is to change the defenders’ positions and open the next route forward.
Frenkie de Jong currently plays for Barcelona as a central midfielder. He has represented the Netherlands internationally.
