Profile
Joan García is a Spanish goalkeeper whose game is built around quick reactions and adaptable shot-stopping. When Luka Sučić broke through Espanyol’s defence in February 2025, García stayed upright and turned the low shot over the bar with his foot: an example of blocking a finish without committing to a dive.
His route into goal began in Sallent de Llobregat, where he initially played outfield before following his older brother into goalkeeping. Youth spells at Sallent, Manresa and Damm preceded his arrival at Espanyol in 2016. He then worked through the club’s academy towards a first-team opportunity.
That opportunity came in December 2021, in a Copa del Rey victory over Solares played on a pitch affected by heavy rain. Establishing himself took longer. During the 2023/24 campaign he became Espanyol’s starting goalkeeper and helped them win promotion, before contributing to their survival in La Liga the following season.
Barcelona announced his signing in June 2025. His reactions remained central to his game after the move: against Espanyol in the 2025/26 league campaign, he reached out with one hand to stop Pere Milla’s header while the match was goalless. La Liga subsequently chose that intervention as its save of the season.
His first Barcelona season, 2025/26, brought the league title and Spanish Super Cup. He also won the Zamora Trophy, an individual award based on goals conceded per game among qualifying goalkeepers. Those achievements marked the next step from his breakthrough in Espanyol’s promotion side to honours with Barcelona.
García was part of Spain’s Olympic gold-medal squad in Paris in 2024. His senior international debut followed on 31 March 2026, when he replaced David Raya during the goalless friendly against Egypt at the RCDE Stadium. Later that year, he was selected in Spain’s World Cup-winning squad, adding another team honour to his international career.
Joan García currently plays for Barcelona as a goalkeeper. He has represented Spain internationally.
