Profile
Gavi is a Spanish midfielder whose intensity works in both directions. He presses opponents to contest possession, then makes runs from midfield to support the attack. His technical ability and willingness to compete give him ways to influence a match with and without the ball.
Born on 5 August 2004 in Los Palacios y Villafranca, near Seville, Pablo Páez Gavira developed in Real Betis’s youth system before joining Barcelona in 2015. He progressed through the academy and made his first-team debut against Getafe on 29 August 2021, replacing Martin Braithwaite.
His international breakthrough followed quickly. On 6 October 2021, he started Spain’s Nations League semi-final victory over Italy and became the country’s youngest senior international at the time. That match included the demanding assignment of marking Marco Verratti, a midfielder he had admired.
In October 2022, he won both the Kopa Trophy and Golden Boy award. The following month brought a World Cup debut and a goal in Spain’s 7–0 win over Costa Rica. He became Spain’s youngest scorer at a men’s World Cup and received the match’s player-of-the-match award.
The Spanish Super Cup final on 15 January 2023 showed how his movement could decide a game. In Barcelona’s 3–1 win over Real Madrid, he scored and supplied both other goals, earning the MVP award. For Robert Lewandowski’s goal, he escaped down the left before passing across the penalty area; later he found Pedri for the third.
That Super Cup was his first major Barcelona trophy, followed by the 2022/23 league title. He also shared in the club’s 2024/25 domestic treble of LaLiga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup, and the 2025/26 league championship. Those honours trace his development from academy graduate to a member of several title-winning squads.
With Spain, he started the 2023 Nations League final against Croatia, which was won on penalties after a goalless draw. In July 2026, he was part of the World Cup-winning squad as Spain defeated Argentina 1–0 in the final.
Gavi currently plays for Barcelona as a central midfielder. He has represented Spain internationally.
