Profile
Pau Cubarsí is a Spanish centre-back who can turn the first pass out of defence into an attacking advantage. He is comfortable waiting for a route to open, then sending the ball through opponents or over them to reach a teammate further forward.
Born on 22 January 2007 in Estanyol, he moved from Girona’s youth system to Barcelona’s La Masia academy in July 2018. His route towards the first team included appearances for Barça Atlètic while he was still part of the club’s youth setup.
His competitive first-team debut for Barcelona came against Unionistas de Salamanca in the Copa del Rey on 18 January 2024. Introduced at half-time in a 3–1 win, he had already played a first-team friendly against Club América the previous month.
His Champions League debut against Napoli on 12 March 2024 made his qualities visible on a bigger stage. He was named Player of the Match in Barcelona’s 3–1 victory. UEFA’s analysis showed how his long passes escaped pressure and picked out forward runs, while his body position helped him block danger. He also stepped towards Victor Osimhen to challenge the striker early, combining patience in possession with assertive defending.
In 2024/25 he won his first senior club honours: LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. His first Barcelona goal came against Atlético Madrid in that season’s cup competition. A second Spanish league title and a second Spanish Super Cup followed in 2025/26.
He made his senior Spain debut on 22 March 2024 in a 1–0 friendly defeat by Colombia in London, becoming at 17 the youngest defender to play for Spain’s senior team. His international rise brought Olympic gold with Spain in Paris in August 2024. Spain beat hosts France after extra time in the final, with Cubarsí among the Barcelona players who received gold medals.
At the 2026 World Cup, he helped Spain become champions and received FIFA’s award for the tournament’s best young player. Spain conceded only once across eight matches.
Pau Cubarsí currently plays for Barcelona as a centre-back. He has represented Spain internationally.
