Profile
Marc-André ter Stegen is a German goalkeeper whose work with the ball helps shape attacks. Comfortable passing with either foot, he offers defenders an extra route out from the back, combining short exchanges with the ability to find team-mates farther up the pitch.
Born in Mönchengladbach on 30 April 1992, he joined Borussia Mönchengladbach’s youth system in 1996. He played outfield before settling in goal, then made his Bundesliga debut against Cologne in April 2011. The move to Barcelona followed in May 2014, taking him beyond the club where he had grown up.
His first season in Spain brought an unusual division of responsibility. Claudio Bravo was Barcelona’s league goalkeeper, while ter Stegen played in the Copa del Rey and Champions League. He was therefore directly involved in the cup campaigns of the team that completed the league, domestic cup and European Cup treble in 2014/15.
His passing range mattered in Barcelona’s possession game. UEFA’s technical review of the 2015/16 Champions League recorded that all 37 of his passes in the away quarter-final against Atlético Madrid reached a team-mate, including 13 long deliveries. That example shows how using the goalkeeper can offer both a nearby passing option and a way to move the ball over greater distances.
In Barcelona’s 2022/23 league-winning season, he kept 26 clean sheets and won his first Zamora Trophy. The award recognised his goals-conceded record.
With Germany, a defining success came at the 2017 Confederations Cup: he helped win the tournament and was named player of the match in the final against Chile. His international career also involved years behind Manuel Neuer, a frustration he described in a September 2024 interview with the German federation.
In September 2024 he ruptured the patellar tendon in his right knee against Villarreal and needed surgery, and he did not play again until May 2025. Back surgery then kept him out for the first four months of 2025/26. Two loan moves opened further chapters in 2026. He joined Girona in January and Ajax in August, both from Barcelona. A hamstring injury limited him to two appearances for Girona and cost him a place in Germany’s 2026 World Cup squad. The Ajax move reunited him with Míchel, who had coached him at Girona.
Marc-André ter Stegen currently plays for Ajax as a goalkeeper. He has represented Germany internationally.
