Profile
Eric García is a centre-back whose value with the ball begins before a pass is made. He reads where pressure is coming from, offers a route out of defence and can move play into the next line. That mix of anticipation and ball progression helps explain why coaches have trusted him beyond his original position.
He entered Barcelona's football school in 2008 and developed at La Masia before moving to Manchester City's youth setup in 2017. His senior debut came against Leicester City in the League Cup in December 2018. Returning to Barcelona in summer 2021, he began his first-team spell with a La Liga start against Real Sociedad that August.
A loan to Girona in 2023/24 gave García regular top-flight football away from Barcelona. Girona finished third in La Liga and qualified for the Champions League, with the defender part of that campaign. The season also forms a useful bridge in his story: his passing education stayed the same, but he had to apply it in another team competing near the top of the table.
Back at Barcelona in 2024/25, García became a flexible option for Hansi Flick. He could build from centre-back, move across to right-back or step into midfield. Those are different defensive starting points, yet each asks him to judge space early and move the ball cleanly. In May 2025 he scored from right-back in a Champions League semi-final against Inter, although Barcelona lost the tie.
Five days later, his header started Barcelona's comeback from two goals down in a 4-3 league win over Real Madrid. It was a conspicuous moment in a season when Barcelona also won La Liga and the Copa del Rey. He remained part of another league-winning Barcelona side in 2025/26, a campaign in which the club used him at right-back, centre-back and defensive midfield.
Spain gave García a different set of milestones. He played in three matches at Euro 2020 and won Olympic silver in Tokyo, then gold with Spain at Paris 2024. In July 2026 he was in Spain's World Cup-winning squad and came on during the final against Argentina.
Eric García currently plays for Barcelona as a centre-back. He has represented Spain internationally.
