Profile
Jan Oblak is a Slovenian goalkeeper who makes positioning central to his work. In a FIFA interview, he explained that being in the right place can make a difficult save look straightforward. He also uses his view from behind the defence to alert team-mates to gaps they cannot see.
Born in Škofja Loka on 7 January 1993, he wanted to play in goal after watching his father, an amateur goalkeeper. He developed at Olimpija Ljubljana and reached their first team in the 2009/10 season.
Benfica signed him the following season, but his progress included loans at Beira-Mar, Olhanense, União de Leiria and Rio Ave. Back at Benfica, he helped win the Portuguese league, cup and league cup in 2013/14, while also playing in that season’s Europa League final.
He joined Atlético Madrid in summer 2014 and initially waited behind Miguel Ángel Moyà. His opening came against Bayer Leverkusen in March 2015: he entered from the bench, kept a clean sheet and saved a penalty in the winning shootout. A month later, eight saves helped Atlético hold Real Madrid to 0–0.
Leverkusen also provided a vivid example of his reactions in March 2017. Oblak stopped Julian Brandt’s effort and then denied Kevin Volland twice in the same sequence. Those three successive saves helped preserve another goalless draw and Atlético’s passage to the Champions League quarter-finals.
His club milestones include the 2017/18 Europa League and 2020/21 LaLiga titles. In 2024/25 he won a record sixth Zamora Trophy, awarded for the lowest goals-conceded-per-match ratio among eligible LaLiga goalkeepers. It recognises a season of defensive results rather than a single spectacular stop.
With Slovenia, he helped secure the country’s first appearance in the EURO knockout rounds in 2024. Against Portugal in the last 16, he saved Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty in extra time, helping take the goalless match to a shootout. Portugal won that shootout, ending Slovenia’s run.
Jan Oblak currently plays for Atletico Madrid as a goalkeeper. He has represented Slovenia internationally.
