Profile
Pablo Barrios is a Spanish midfielder whose game connects defensive organisation with careful work on the ball. His contribution can begin before a tackle: moving across with a midfield partner, protecting the space inside a full-back and keeping an opponent from receiving freely between the lines.
UEFA's analysis of Atlético Madrid's March 2025 Champions League meeting with Real Madrid showed that balance in detail. Barrios supported Reinildo and Conor Gallagher on the left, then combined with Rodrigo De Paul to move possession beyond Jude Bellingham after an interception. The sequence explains his value as a link: a recovery becomes a chance to establish possession and move the team upfield.
His development took him between Madrid's two major clubs. Barrios joined Atlético's academy from Real Madrid in 2018 and made his Atlético B debut against Villaverde in January 2022. In the 2021/22 UEFA Youth League, he scored twice in a 3–2 win over his former club as Atlético progressed to the last four.
The first-team breakthrough followed on 29 October 2022, when he made his senior Atlético debut in a league match at Cádiz. His first senior goal arrived against Arenteiro in the Copa del Rey that December. Atlético subsequently made him a permanent member of the first-team squad, formalising the step from academy prospect to senior player.
Barrios also played a direct part in Spain's Olympic gold in Paris. He started the men's final against France on 9 August 2024, a game Spain won 5–3 after extra time. The medal marked a team achievement in which he participated on the pitch in the decisive match.
His senior Spain debut came on 18 November 2024 in a 3–2 Nations League victory over Switzerland in Tenerife. He replaced Pedri in the 79th minute, moving from Olympic football to the senior international side. That progression did not mean automatic tournament selection: he was absent from the 26-player World Cup squad Spain announced in May 2026.
Pablo Barrios currently plays for Atletico Madrid as a central midfielder. He has represented Spain internationally.
