Profile
Nico Williams is a Spanish winger whose threat comes from giving defenders several problems at once. He can accelerate down the outside to cross, move inside towards goal or combine with a full-back. That variety makes his dribbling more useful than speed alone.
Born in Pamplona on 12 July 2002, he played in Osasuna’s youth system before joining Athletic Club’s Lezama academy in 2013. He progressed through the club’s youth and reserve teams, making his senior debut against Real Valladolid on 28 April 2021. His older brother Iñaki shared the pitch with him that evening.
In April 2024, Williams helped Athletic end a 40-year wait for the Copa del Rey. He supplied the pass for Oihan Sancet’s equaliser in the final and was named the match’s best player, recognition of both his attacking contribution and his repeated success taking on opponents down the left.
Three months later, he scored Spain’s opening goal in the EURO 2024 final against England, finishing a pass from Lamine Yamal. Spain won 2–1 in Berlin on 14 July, and Williams again received the final’s Player of the Match award.
He added a World Cup title with Spain in 2026. Coming off the bench against Argentina in the final, he headed the ball to Ferran Torres for the extra-time goal that secured a 1–0 victory.
His partnership with Marc Cucurella at EURO 2024 showed how movement helps his individual skill. UEFA’s analysts highlighted Cucurella running inside him against Italy, drawing away a defender and leaving Williams space to cut in and shoot. Williams could also go outside: his cross from that route produced Italy’s own goal.
His work without the ball also mattered. In the semi-final against France, he dropped back alongside Cucurella to help contain Ousmane Dembélé. UEFA’s observers described how that support gave Spain two defenders against one attacker, showing the defensive responsibility that accompanied his attacking freedom.
Nico Williams currently plays for Athletic Club as a left winger. He has represented Spain internationally.
