Profile
Carlos Romero Serrano is a left-back who can influence both ends of a move. From the left touchline he has the range to advance and deliver into the box, but his work is not confined to overlapping runs. Examples include starting an attack from deep and blocking an effort near his own goal line.
His route to the top flight began in Valencia's youth system and continued at Torre Levante. Villarreal brought him into its academy in 2019. He moved through its youth side and Villarreal C before spending two seasons with Villarreal B in Spain's second division. That path gave him senior football before he became a regular top-flight left-back.
During 2023/24 Romero divided his time between Villarreal's reserve and first teams. Espanyol then took him on loan in July 2024. The club described him as a left-back who could also play wing-back, a role that can demand he cover the whole flank rather than stay on the last line of defence.
Villarreal arranged a second Espanyol loan for 2025/26. One example of Romero's attacking contribution came against Alavés in January 2026, when his cross supplied Roberto Fernández's opening header. The move shows how he can create from a wide starting position without needing to finish the attack himself.
A May 2026 win at Osasuna displayed a different route into the game. Romero scored from outside the area after a free kick was blocked, then cleared an Osasuna effort close to his goal line. He also began the move that led to Kike García's winner with a pass to Pol Lozano. The sequence illustrates why his influence cannot be measured only by goals or assists.
After Espanyol's two loan seasons, Villarreal announced in May 2026 that Romero would be part of its first-team squad for 2026/27. The club's August season preview described him as one of the returning faces. His career to that point had moved from academy and reserve football to repeated top-flight responsibility, with the left flank as the constant thread.
Carlos Romero currently plays for Villarreal as a left-back.
