Career & playing style
Gabriel Suazo is a left-sided defender whose game makes more sense once you know he was a midfielder first. He can advance to support an attack, but his earlier education also shows in how he adjusts his body position and slides across to defend space. That blend lets him work as a conventional left-back or farther forward as a wing-back.
At Colo-Colo, Suazo moved through several midfield and attacking positions before youth coach Claudio Rojas shifted him to left-back and, at times, the left of central defence. Suazo credits that coaching with teaching him how to orient his body and defend duels. He later played midfield for the first team too, which helps explain why his role cannot be reduced to runs down the touchline.
He progressed from Colo-Colo's academy to the first team and eventually wore the captain's armband. He was part of Chilean title-winning sides there, including a league championship as captain. Suazo describes his approach to leadership through a simple habit: chasing and contesting a ball until the play is genuinely over.
In January 2023 he left Chile for Toulouse, his first club abroad. That April he started the Coupe de France final as Toulouse beat Nantes 5-1.
In France, Suazo showed two ways a left-sided defender can influence an attack: beginning a move from deep and arriving to finish one. Against Reims in October 2023, his opening pass freed Logan Costa to set up Thijs Dallinga. In December, Suazo himself finished an Aron Dønnum cross to win at LASK and secure Toulouse's Europa League knockout place.
Sevilla announced his arrival from Toulouse on 12 July 2025. The move brought his left-sided experience from Chile and France into Spanish football. Suazo has explained that he learned midfield's view of a move before settling into the defensive lane where he can read it, support it and recover when it breaks down.
For Chile, he was named in the 2024 Copa América squad and started the final group match against Canada, where a second booking ended his game before Chile's group exit. He was appointed Chile's captain for a September 2025 qualifying window, by which time the team could no longer reach the 2026 World Cup.
