Profile
Career & playing style
Ionuț Radu's career shows how a goalkeeper's work can continue after the first save. Celta's September 2025 match at Elche illustrates it: he stopped a penalty and other shots during a difficult spell, but Elche eventually scored from a loose ball in the area.
Radu told Romania's federation that he first played further forward as a boy before settling in goal. Youth spells at Viitorul, Steaua and Dinamo București preceded his 2013 move to Inter's academy. Inter's youth side won the 2015 Viareggio Cup and 2015/16 Coppa Italia with him in its setup; he made his senior Inter league debut in May 2016.
Regular senior work came at Genoa, where he played 33 Serie A matches in 2018/19. Inter signed him from Genoa in July 2019 and immediately loaned him back for another season. His senior education largely came away from Inter.
He captained Romania's under-21 side on its road to the 2019 European Championship. Against Portugal in September 2018, he saved a stoppage-time penalty to preserve a qualifying win. Romania topped its finals group ahead of France and England, then lost 4-2 to Germany in the semi-final.
Further spells followed in Italy and abroad, including Auxerre and Bournemouth. Inter transferred him permanently to Venezia in February 2025, and he played there in the closing part of that Serie A season. Celta signed him from Venezia in June 2025, bringing him to LaLiga before the club's return to European competition.
Celta placed him behind a back three in several matches. In January 2026 he saved a Valencia penalty before Celta won 4-1. He also started the club's September Europa League opener at Omonoia, making saves before a late goal settled a 1-0 defeat. Shot-stopping kept both games within reach but decided neither alone.
At senior level, he kept goal for Romania in the March 2026 World Cup play-off defeat to Türkiye and was later selected for the September Nations League squad. Across club and country, his story is one of repeated responses to pressure.
