Profile
Thibaut Courtois is a Belgian goalkeeper whose long reach is backed by decisions about when to move and when to hold his ground. Judging whether his defenders can still intervene helps him prepare for a shot without committing himself too early.
Born in Bree on 11 May 1992, he made his breakthrough with Genk, helping them win the Belgian league in 2010/11. Chelsea signed him in July 2011 and immediately loaned him to Atlético Madrid, beginning a three-season spell in Spain.
That spell brought the 2012 Europa League and the 2013/14 Spanish league title. Returning to Chelsea in 2014, he displaced Petr Čech as first-choice goalkeeper and won the Premier League in 2014/15 and 2016/17. In the latter campaign, 16 clean sheets earned him the league's Golden Glove.
He joined Real Madrid in 2018. His nine saves in the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool earned him the player-of-the-match award as Madrid won 1–0. The interventions required different solutions: he got down to turn Sadio Mané's shot onto a post, then stretched out his right arm to deny Mohamed Salah late on.
Another European final followed in 2024, when Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund 2–0. Courtois kept out efforts from Karim Adeyemi and Niclas Füllkrug before Madrid's second-half goals, helping preserve the clean sheet on which the victory was built.
For Belgium, he won the Golden Glove at the 2018 World Cup as the team finished third. He also played in the 2026 tournament, when Belgium reached the quarter-finals before losing 2–1 to Spain.
FIFA's technical analysis of the 2025 Club World Cup explains the preparation behind his saves. Against Salzburg's Adam Daghim, Courtois moved back towards his goal while defenders remained involved. As the attacker went outside and prepared to shoot, he settled with his arms low, ready to push away the ball with his right hand. The sequence shows how reading the attack and preparing his body give his reflexes room to work.
Thibaut Courtois currently plays for Real Madrid as a goalkeeper. He has represented Belgium internationally.
