Profile
Federico Valverde is a Uruguayan midfielder whose running helps a team change shape without changing players. He can defend the right flank, move inside to strengthen central midfield, then carry the ball forward or run beyond the back line when an attack opens up.
Born in Montevideo on 22 July 1998, he developed at Peñarol before moving to Real Madrid’s Castilla side in 2016. He spent 2017/18 at Deportivo La Coruña and made his Madrid first-team debut against Viktoria Plzeň in the Champions League on 23 October 2018.
His international breakthrough came during that development period. Valverde won the Silver Ball at the 2017 Under-20 World Cup, recognising him as the tournament’s second-best player. In September that year, he scored on his senior Uruguay debut in a 2–1 qualifying win away to Paraguay.
The 2022 Champions League final showed how his running could decide a major match. Against Liverpool, he advanced down the right into space left by Andy Robertson and drove a low ball towards the far post. Vinícius Júnior finished it for the only goal, securing Madrid’s European title.
His defensive positioning mattered in the 2024 final against Borussia Dortmund, too. After starting on the right, Valverde moved closer to Toni Kroos and Eduardo Camavinga in the second half. UEFA’s observers highlighted how that adjustment improved Madrid’s balance behind the ball as they went on to win another Champions League.
On 11 March 2026, his attacking runs brought a first-half hat-trick in Madrid’s 3–0 Champions League last-16 first-leg win over Manchester City. He raced onto a long pass for the opener; for the third, he lifted the ball over Marc Guéhi and volleyed in. That finish later won UEFA’s fan vote for the competition’s goal of the season.
Valverde captained Uruguay at the 2026 World Cup. His side finished third in its group, with a 1–0 defeat by Spain confirming elimination before the knockout rounds.
Federico Valverde currently plays for Real Madrid as a central midfielder. He has represented Uruguay internationally.
