Profile
Sergio Gómez's route from attacking midfield to left-back explains the two sides of his game. He can begin deeper on the left, then advance to supply a cross or a set piece. That gives a team another way to create from wide areas without asking a forward to start every move.
Born in Badalona, Gómez passed through Espanyol's youth set-up and Barcelona's academy. He moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2018 and made a Bundesliga debut that April. Two loan seasons at Huesca followed, including the club's promotion to La Liga in 2019/20.
At Anderlecht in 2021/22, Vincent Kompany shifted him into left-back after he had played further forward at Dortmund and Huesca. Gómez later said the switch surprised him, but that he came to enjoy the position. His delivery and attacking instincts now came from a deeper starting point. Anderlecht named him its Player of the Year before Manchester City signed him in 2022.
City used Gómez across two trophy-winning seasons, although he was not a regular starter. He made his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace in August 2022 and started away at Sevilla in the Champions League soon afterward. He belonged to the squad that won the 2022/23 treble.
For Spain's under-21s, Gómez showed another version of that left-sided range. He scored against Romania, Switzerland and Ukraine at the 2023 European Championship, sharing the finals' top-scorer award as Spain finished runners-up. In the semi-final against Ukraine he switched flanks during the match, a reminder that his attacking use was not fixed to one touchline.
He was a member of Spain's gold-medal men's football squad at the Paris Olympics in 2024, then made his senior international debut as a substitute against Denmark that October.
Gómez joined Real Sociedad in July 2024. A free kick he delivered against Valladolid in March 2025 went straight in, while his cross created a goal against Espanyol in May 2026: two examples of how his delivery can change a match. Between them, he started Sociedad's April 2026 Copa del Rey final victory over Atlético de Madrid. The lasting pattern is a defender's starting position paired with the passing and delivery of his earlier attacking roles.
Sergio Gómez currently plays for Real Sociedad as a left-back. He has represented Spain internationally.
