Profile
Takefusa Kubo is a Japanese attacker whose most revealing work begins on the right. He can receive near the touchline, carry past a defender and turn that advantage into a pass or shot closer to goal. The value of the dribble is what follows it: moving the defence and opening a route for a teammate.
Born in Kawasaki, Kubo entered Barcelona's youth system as a child, returned to Japan in 2015 and made his Japanese top-flight debut with FC Tokyo at 15. Real Madrid signed him in 2019, but his senior education in Spain came through loans to Mallorca, Villarreal and Getafe, followed by another spell at Mallorca. He joined Real Sociedad in July 2022.
He marked his first league match for Sociedad with the winner at Cádiz in August 2022, controlling Mikel Merino's pass before finishing. Sociedad finished fourth in the 2022/23 league season and reached the Champions League. Kubo's goal against Real Madrid that May was part of that run.
His September 2023 form brought individual recognition: La Liga named him its player of the month after a run that included a double against Granada. He then appeared in Sociedad's 2023/24 Champions League campaign, including the round-of-16 second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.
La Liga's January 2025 technical analysis located him on the right flank and highlighted completed dribbles, passes in the final third and actions that led quickly to a shot. Those observations explain why he is more than a one-on-one specialist: after drawing a defender toward the wing, he can carry inside or release the ball into a newly opened channel.
In April 2026, Kubo entered the Copa del Rey final in the 88th minute as Sociedad beat Atlético de Madrid on penalties, though he did not take a kick in the shootout. He also started Japan's 2026 World Cup opener against the Netherlands. Japan progressed from its group but lost to Brazil in the round of 32.
Takefusa Kubo currently plays for Real Sociedad as a right winger. He has represented Japan internationally.
