Career & playing style
Dominik Greif came through the goalkeeping ranks in Bratislava before establishing himself with Slovan's senior side. The club records league appearances from 2015/16; by 2018/19 he was a regular. In 2019/20 the Slovak league named him player of the season and put him in its best XI for a second straight year. Slovan won the league and cup that season, separate team honours from Greif's individual award.
Slovan's playing record also lists Greif in goal during its 2019/20 Europa League campaign, which reached the group stage. It was another stage in his development before leaving Slovakia: domestic and European matches asked him to protect the same goal against different opponents and patterns of pressure.
Mallorca brought him from Slovan in 2021, his first move abroad. His clearest cup contribution came in the February 2024 Copa del Rey semifinal at Real Sociedad. He saved Brais Méndez's penalty during play, then stopped Mikel Oyarzabal's opening shootout attempt. Mallorca reached the final, where Greif started against Athletic Club; Athletic won on penalties. His part in the run and the final result are distinct.
Those two saves show an important part of Greif's job. A penalty demands a decision about direction while leaving time to reach the ball. His wider shot-stopping was visible in Mallorca's goalless May 2025 visit to Rayo Vallecano, when the club reported several early saves. Those interventions kept the match level while Mallorca's attack looked for a breakthrough.
After Mallorca finished the 2024/25 league season in tenth place, Greif joined Lyon in 2025. At Auxerre that November he dived right to turn away Lassine Sinayoko's penalty in a 0-0 draw. Against Le Havre in December, he stopped Issa Soumaré's spot kick and later reacted to a close-range effort from Samatta as Lyon won 1-0. The sequence illustrates anticipation from a set position and reaction when the ball arrives quickly.
Greif's senior Slovakia connection predates his move abroad: Mallorca's 2021 announcement introduced him as a full international. A goalkeeper's intervention can be decisive even when it does not produce a win. The Mallorca semifinal and Lyon's goalless draw at Auxerre both turned on penalties Greif kept out, giving his team a chance to take something from the match.
