Profile
Jonathan Tah is a German centre-back whose game is built around protecting the space in front of goal. He combines strength in aerial duels with the speed to recover behind the defence, while his measured passing gives teammates a reliable starting point for attacks.
Born in Hamburg on 11 February 1996, he played youth football at Altona 93 and Concordia before entering Hamburger SV’s academy in 2009. His professional debut followed in August 2013. A season on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf in 2014/15 preceded his move to Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.
Under Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen, Tah occupied the middle of a three-man defence. As the defenders beside him advanced or challenged opponents out wide, he protected the central space behind them. Reading danger early and directing teammates were part of a role that demanded more than winning individual tackles.
The defining team achievement came in 2023/24: Leverkusen won their first Bundesliga title without losing a league match, then added the DFB Cup. They also reached the Europa League final, where Atalanta beat them. Tah’s decade at the club ran from 2015 to 2025.
He joined Bayern Munich in June 2025, with his registration brought forward in time for the Club World Cup. His first season brought another Bundesliga and DFB Cup double. He started the May 2026 cup final, a 3–0 victory over Stuttgart that sealed the league-and-cup double.
Tah made his senior Germany debut against England in March 2016. At Euro 2024 he started four of Germany’s five matches. His first World Cup, in 2026, ended in the round of 32 when Germany lost to Paraguay on penalties, with Tah among the players who missed in the shootout.
His contribution with the ball often lies in keeping an attack connected. Bundesliga analysis in February 2026 highlighted his preference for shorter, safer passes. Finding an available teammate keeps possession moving while limiting unnecessary risks near his own goal; it is a quieter skill than repeatedly attempting ambitious passes through the opposition.
Jonathan Tah currently plays for Bayern München as a centre-back. He has represented Germany internationally.
