Profile
Dayot Upamecano is a French centre-back whose game connects assertive defending with ambitious passing. His speed matters when a team presses high: if opponents break through, he can turn and chase the space behind him. With the ball, he looks for passes through the opposition’s lines.
Born in Évreux on 27 October 1998, he developed at Valenciennes before moving to Salzburg in summer 2015. That move followed a European Under-17 Championship win with France. His football education included midfield as well as defence, giving him experience of receiving and playing the ball in different areas.
He joined RB Leipzig in January 2017. A defining European night came in August 2020, when UEFA named him player of the match in the 2–1 quarter-final win over Atlético Madrid. Leipzig reached their first Champions League semi-final, with UEFA’s observer praising his one-against-one defending and composure in possession.
Bayern Munich signed him in July 2021. He won Bundesliga titles in 2022, 2023, 2025 and 2026. In May 2026 he also started the 3–0 victory over Stuttgart in the German Cup final, helping complete a league and cup double.
That development also involved learning to organise. In February 2025, Upamecano described Vincent Kompany’s video work with the defenders, corrections to his positioning and encouragement to communicate more. His account shows the detailed coaching behind a role that demands decisions as well as physical strength.
For France, his senior debut came against Sweden in September 2020. He was part of the 2021 Nations League-winning squad and played the full 2022 World Cup final, which France lost to Argentina on penalties. At the 2026 World Cup he appeared in all eight French matches as the team finished fourth.
A pass at Celtic in February 2025 illustrated his attacking contribution from defence: he lifted the ball forward for Michael Olise’s opening goal. It was a practical example of his range, finding an attacker beyond the opposition rather than simply moving possession across the back line.
Dayot Upamecano currently plays for Bayern München as a centre-back. He has represented France internationally.
