Profile
Luis Díaz is a Colombian winger who attacks from the left with a right-footed dribbling game. Sharp changes of direction help him escape a marker, while his acceleration makes him dangerous when possession changes hands. He can drive towards the box or continue outside to deliver from the byline.
Born in Barrancas on 13 January 1997, he came to wider attention at the 2015 Copa América of Indigenous People. That tournament helped open his route to Barranquilla FC, where he made his senior debut in April 2016 before moving to Junior in 2017.
After helping Junior win league titles in 2018 and 2019, he joined Porto ahead of the 2019/20 season. His first campaign in Portugal brought a league-and-cup double, as well as his first experience of Champions League and Europa League football.
Liverpool signed him in January 2022. Within months he had started the FA Cup and League Cup finals, winning both, and appeared in the Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid. He later helped Liverpool win the Premier League in 2024/25, playing centrally as well as out wide.
For Colombia, he finished the 2021 Copa América as joint-leading scorer with Lionel Messi on four goals. Three years later he played in the final as Colombia lost 1–0 to Argentina after extra time.
He joined Bayern Munich in July 2025. The 2025/26 campaign brought another domestic double: the Bundesliga and German Cup. In the cup final against Stuttgart, his pass set up Harry Kane’s second goal in a 3–0 win.
At the 2026 World Cup, Díaz and Colombia reached the last 16. He converted his penalty in the shootout against Switzerland, but Colombia lost the tie.
His pressing has the same forward intent as his dribbling. Liverpool’s published scouting notes describe him anticipating the next pass and racing to intercept near the opposition goal. Winning possession there can leave defenders little time to recover, making his running useful before he has the ball as well as after he receives it.
Luis Díaz currently plays for Bayern München as a left winger. He has represented Colombia internationally.
