Profile
Career & playing style
Derry Scherhant's attacking game gives a defender two problems: his burst down the left and his movement inside. The right-footed winger seeks one-on-one duels, using pace and feints to make room for a shot or pass. His earlier work as a striker also shows in runs behind the back line.
His route to the Bundesliga was unusually local. Scherhant played for Viktoria Berlin, Tennis Borussia and Berliner SC before joining Hertha BSC's academy in October 2020. He moved from its under-19 side to the reserves in 2021, scoring 16 goals in his first Regionalliga season. Hertha gave him a professional contract in June 2022.
After Hertha's 2023 relegation, he developed in the second division. He appeared in all 34 league matches in 2024/25 and scored seven times. By then he was doing more than finishing moves: carrying the ball at defenders and combining with Fabian Reese gave Hertha ways to reach space behind opponents.
Scherhant has explained the connection himself. At Hertha he spoke of seeking dribbles from the wing and of his under-19 and reserve-team years as a striker. In a two-man attack with Reese, both could run in behind. His wide position therefore need not leave him fixed to the touchline.
Freiburg announced his signing from Hertha in May 2025. During 2025/26 he played Bundesliga and European matches for the club. Freiburg reached the Europa League final on 20 May 2026; Scherhant entered as a substitute, and Aston Villa won 3-0.
Two Freiburg matches show different uses of his movement. Against Motherwell in an August 2026 Conference League play-off, he ran onto a pass behind the defence to score, then delivered corners for teammates. At Frankfurt in September, he cut inside to finish and later crossed to the far post for Yuito Suzuki. One starting position produced both a shot and a chance for someone else.
His international progression has distinct stages. He first played for Germany's under-20s against England in March 2023 and later represented the under-21s, though he was left out of their final squad for the 2025 European Championship. On 1 October 2026 he made his senior Germany debut, starting the Nations League win over Serbia.
