Profile
Romano Schmid is an Austrian attacking midfielder whose close control and movement help him keep attacks going under pressure. His role also depends on the players around him: at Werder Bremen, Leonardo Bittencourt explained that cover from himself and Jens Stage allowed Schmid to push forward. That balance gave his mobility a purpose in the final third.
His route into senior football passed through Sturm Graz before a move to Red Bull Salzburg in August 2017. Salzburg planned to use him at Liefering to learn their playing system. In January 2019, he signed for Werder Bremen, then spent a season and a half on loan at Wolfsberger AC.
That loan expanded the job he could do. In a 2020 interview, Schmid described moving from the number-ten role of his youth into a deeper number-eight position. Pressing throughout matches under Gerhard Struber demanded more running and defensive work. Schmid credited that experience with improving his defending and endurance, while acknowledging that Germany’s speed and quality required further adaptation without the ball.
His German Bundesliga debut followed in December 2020. He then helped Werder win promotion back to the top division in 2022 and made his senior Austria debut later that year.
Austria’s 3–2 victory over the Netherlands at EURO 2024 supplied a defining attacking moment. Schmid headed in Florian Grillitsch’s cross to restore Austria’s lead in Berlin on 25 June. Marcel Sabitzer later scored the winner, and Austria finished top of their group.
He also scored at the 2026 World Cup, opening the scoring in Austria’s 3–1 group-stage victory over Jordan. Their tournament ended in the round of 32 with a 3–0 defeat by Spain on 2 July.
In August 2026, Schmid made a permanent move from Werder to Frosinone. The transfer opened an Italian chapter after a Bremen spell that had included relegation, promotion and his emergence as a senior international.
Romano Schmid currently plays for Frosinone as an attacking midfielder. He has represented Austria internationally.
