Profile
Nadiem Amiri is a German midfielder whose attacking contribution comes from combining a pass with a threat of his own. He can supply the final ball from central areas or find a teammate with a cross, while his willingness to move towards the penalty area gives defenders another problem to track.
Born in Ludwigshafen, Amiri played youth football for Ludwigshafener SC, Kaiserslautern and Waldhof Mannheim before joining Hoffenheim in 2012. He was part of their German under-19 championship team in 2014 and made his Bundesliga debut in February 2015, bringing his development into senior football.
Germany provided another route to important experience. Amiri belonged to the side that won the European Under-21 Championship in 2017. Two years later he played in all five matches as Germany finished runners-up, scoring twice in the semi-final and again in the final defeat by Spain.
He joined Bayer Leverkusen in July 2019 and spent six months on loan at Genoa in 2022. A move to Mainz in January 2024 followed.
At Mainz, Amiri became a substantial part of the team’s recovery. He helped the club avoid relegation in 2024, then contributed to the campaign that secured Conference League qualification in 2025. His value lay in creating chances as well as finishing them, rather than in one narrowly defined attacking task.
The use of those qualities changed under Urs Fischer during the 2025/26 season. Previously deployed deeper in midfield, Amiri moved further forward into the space behind the attack. Fischer highlighted his ability to provide the final pass and threaten goal. Penalties were another contribution: he converted all eight he took in that Bundesliga campaign.
Amiri made his senior Germany debut in October 2019 and his World Cup debut in June 2026. Coming off the bench against Ivory Coast, he crossed for Deniz Undav to equalise in a 2–1 victory. Germany’s tournament ended against Paraguay in the round of 32; Amiri came on in extra time and converted his kick in the losing shootout.
